How a Car Battery Works
The battery is essential to starting your ignition. When everything is working properly, it provides the initial spark that turns your engine on.
Many of the functions in your car and its electric system are then powered by the alternator, but it’s the battery that’s necessary to get all the systems fired up in the first place.

Battery Problems
Generally, there are two issues your battery can run into. The first is if it’s too weak to have enough of a charge to start your engine. When this occurs, you can usually tell when you try to start the car and it either takes longer to turn over or doesn’t start.
If it takes longer and seems to struggle with starting, your battery is weak. If the car won’t start at all, your battery is likely dead.
The second issue is if your battery is damaged. You can usually see any damage by looking at it. If there’s any signs of corrosion around the connectors or visible cracks in the battery, you’ll be able to spot them right away.
If there’s a serious crack and leak, you may even smell it while you’re sitting in the driver’s seat. It’ll give off a pungent sulfur smell.
In many cases, you can clean residue off the battery, but if there’s a crack, it’ll have to be replaced.

What Causes Battery Problems?
When you use a household appliance a lot, it can drain the battery faster. Car batteries operate on different rules.
Since the battery is necessary for starting the ignition, the best way to keep it functioning is to use it a lot. The best thing for your battery is to drive your car every day for a substantial amount of time.
The life of a car battery is usually between three and five years. However, if you never drive the car, or only use it for 15 minutes at a time, it can die a lot faster.
One thing that can actually drain a battery overnight is to leave the electrical system on when the ignition is off. For example, if you leave an interior light on overnight, your car probably won’t be able to start in the morning.
