The Importance of Tire Rotation
Rotating and balancing your tires regularly will help them last longer and remain durable. As miles add up, your tires wear down because of friction between the tire and the surfaces you drive on. This is a normal part of your vehicle's wear and tear.
Many factors contribute to wear. Your front tires operate under a different set of mechanical and environmental conditions than the rear tires. The front tires on a front-wheel-drive system are responsible for accelerating and steering, while the rear tires are mainly traction. Depending on passenger and cargo weight distribution, the front and rear tires are under different loads as well.
The tires on the front of rear-wheel-drive cars are for steering and provide traction, but the load is steady, whereas the rear tires are responsible for accelerating and traction, not steering, but the load can vary. Road surfaces, temperatures, and weather all play a role too.
If your tires remain in the same position, the tires that absorb the most impact and force from all these factors will wear prematurely. By rotating your tires regularly, you'll get better fuel economy, more life from your tires, improved traction and handling, and protect yourself from a potential blowout.
How Do I Know When to Rotate My Tires?
If you can't remember the last time you had your tires rotated you probably need to have it done. Uneven wear can present symptoms you can look for to help you decide, regardless of how long it has been. If you feel your vehicle pull to one side while driving in a straight line, your tires might be the cause. It could also be something more serious with your suspension or brakes, so don't ignore this symptom. Get your tires checked right away.
Any unusual vibrations, thumping, or noises can be a sign your tires need attention. These could be caused by a flat spot on your tire from an emergency braking situation, a nail or other foreign object lodged in your tire, or an issue with the inner radial breaking down. These can also be a sign that something else is wrong with your vehicle, so get it checked right away.
Loss of traction while accelerating is usually a tire issue. If your wheels are slipping and spinning, especially on dry surfaces, your tires are probably worn on whichever axle is responsible for accelerating. You should have them rotated right away and possibly even replaced if they are too far worn.
If you like keeping a regular schedule then the rule of thumb is to rotate your tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles or every other oil change. Our Express Service can do both in minutes and have you back to your busy life in no time.
What About Balancing My Tires?
Balancing your tires is critical to getting the most out of them. Balancing is achieved by attaching small weights to the side of your wheels. These weights allow the wheel to rotate with minimal vibration. Without proper balancing, your tires will wear unevenly and fast.
The cost is only a few dollars per tire, making it a very inexpensive way to protect your tires. Balancing should be done every time you put a new tire on a wheel or your old tire is taken off for repairs and put back on. This small adjustment can save you hundreds of dollars in tire replacement. At Huffines Chevrolet, we are happy to check your tires for proper balancing when we rotate them.
Do I Need an Alignment When I Rotate My Tires?
You don't need to get a wheel alignment every time you rotate your tires. Most mechanics agree that you should have this done once every two to three years. Your owner's manual will have the factory's recommendation. If your tires are wearing prematurely or unevenly you might need an alignment.
There are two- and four-wheel alignments. A two-wheel alignment is performed on the front end of the car. This is done to put the wheels in the proper position within the steering and suspension system for optimal traction and control. A four-wheel alignment is commonly necessary for all-wheel-drive vehicles.
The cost to perform a wheel alignment varies by vehicle. When compared to the cost of buying new tires because your bad alignment wore them out quickly, many of our customers choose to have their wheels aligned with every rotation.
