In 1958, Don Hewlett began his automotive career at a Chevrolet store in Austin, Texas. Over the next 14 years, he worked in several departments and held many positions from salesman to new car and truck manager and finally to used car manager learning the skills that eventually would take him where he is today.
One of Mr. Hewlett’s lifelong dreams was to own a car dealership by the age of 35. In 1971, he achieved this when he became a partner in Compton Motors in downtown Georgetown. In 1984, Mr. Hewlett was able to purchase the remaining stock and changed the name of the dealership to Don Hewlett Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Buick.
While the Austin Avenue dealership was very successful, the confines of a smaller downtown business proved frustrating. Recognizing the tremendous growth that was happening in Central Texas, the Hewlett’s looked to the highway for expansion. In March of 2000, the Hewlett family opened the doors to the “new” 17-acre Chevrolet Oldsmobile Buick facility at IH35 & Westinghouse Rd. This new facility allowed greater opportunities for both the customer and the dealership. The Hewlett’s paved the way for what is sometimes referred to as the “Motor Mile North”.
In August of 2001, Volkswagen was added as a franchise and the Hewlett Family of Dealerships was born. The VW store houses sales, service and parts departments, and also has a trendy Boutique featuring everything VW from tee-shirts to floor mats to beetle cookie cutters.
In late 2001, the purchase of the Hummer brand by GM paved the way for even more opportunity. In July of ’02 Hummer was added to the existing GM franchises and the Hewlett family offered their first high-end luxury vehicles for sale. The Hummer franchise is located on the South end of the Hewlett property in a unique 8,000 square ft. Quonset style sales facility
The success of the Hewlett Family of Dealerships is due in large measure to applying the consistent philosophy of developing “Customers for Life” across all the dealerships. Equally responsible for the Group’s success are the fine men and women who make up the Dealership’s employee family. Many of the managers have been promoted from within and there are dozens of employees who have worked for the family for more than a decade.
The Hewlett Family is proud to be a part of not only the Georgetown Community, but Austin and its surrounding cities. We look forward to meeting you.
