Performance
The 2016 Chevy Malibu focuses on the two things that drivers need today: performance and fuel economy. The 2017 edition takes that even further. The EcoTec four-cylinder engine earns 27 mpg/city and 36 mpg/highway. Helping it do even more, there's a stop-start system. The 2017 edition has added a nine-speed automatic transmission for the speedier 2-liter 250-horsepower turbo. The Malibu hybrid continues to surprise drivers with its remarkable fuel economy. For 2017, the numbers have gone up again. The Malibu earns 49 mpg city/43 mpg highway.
Appearance
Sleek and aerodynamic, the 2016 Malibu has earned many admirers. While so many sedans look sedate, there's a sexier, sportier feel to this four-door ride. The 2017 edition has the same curb appeal. Four main trim levels worked well for 2016, and the 2017 edition is continuing this tradition. The L offers Bluetooth connectivity, an available WiFi hotspot, and a tilt-telescopic steering wheel. The split back seat lets you expand the trunk easily. The LS quiets the cabin with a laminated windshield and side windows. It packs on value with a touchscreen and rearview camera. The 2017 editions offer the latest in smartphone integration via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The LT and Hybrid editions add more amenities such as a power driver's chair and rear vents. Premier standards, which are offered on the LT and Hybrid editions as options, include push button start, two extra USB ports, a wireless phone charger, an upgraded touchscreen, leather upholstery, and a power passenger seat. Premier drivers also enjoy exclusive access to ventilated front seats and a navigation system.
Safety
When it comes to passenger protection, the 2016 and 2017 Malibu sedans are evenly matched. Each has earned five stars when tested by the federal NHTSA. The 2016 Malibu also earned Top Safety Pick Plus from the private Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The forward collision watch can alert the driver if traffic is stopping. In the event that the driver doesn't respond or simply can't respond fast enough, the system can brake, lessening or eliminating impact. The IIHS tested both the low-speed and high-speed autobrake before determining the Malibu's superior rating in this category. The 2017 edition hasn't yet been rated by the IIHS, but it comes with these same attributes. It also strengthening these features with a front pedestrian watch with auto-brake. Chevy is working to prevent common side swipe accidents through a lane watch, a rear cross-traffic alert for reverse maneuvers, and a blind spot monitor.
