DoES MY Electric Car Need An Oil Change?
There are many reasons to think about buying an electric car. For one thing, you will never have to buy gas, and in addition to saving a significant amount of money, it's also a good way to help the planet.
Electric cars do, however, still require regular maintenance in order to stay healthy, but does an oil change need to be on this list?
Electric Cars Don’t Have Engines
The main job of oil is to keep the moving parts in your engine lubricated. Because electric cars don’t have engines (they're powered by motors and batteries) they don’t use oil, and therefore, oil changes aren’t necessary.
However, that doesn’t mean you can forego other service tasks. In order to keep your car running well, it still needs:
- Fluid top-offs: Your car may not have oil, but it still utilizes a lot of other fluids. The transmission, power steering, and braking systems all rely on it, so it needs to be at the right levels.
- Tire rotations: Rotating your tires helps them wear down more evenly. This will make them last a lot longer and improve their road performance.
- Brake checks: It's a smart idea to have your brakes looked at on a yearly basis. Things like shoes and pads wear down over time, so annual checks help you be proactive about any potential replacements.
