While it may not seem as treacherous as winter snow, the summer rain can cause flash floods, and even small amounts of rain can be surprisingly dangerous for drivers. This year, stay safe on the roads and remember these safety tips for driving in the rain:
- As soon as it begins to rain, take note. The most likely time that your vehicle will hydroplane is in the ten minutes or so immediately following the beginning of the storm.
- If you do find yourself hydroplaning, steer in the direction of the skid, not away from it. This will help your tires to grip into the road again, allowing you to then finally turn in the right direction.
- Avoid driving through large puddles and never attempt to drive through a large body of water. A depth as shallow as 12 inches could cause your vehicle to float away.
- If you do find yourself in a floating vehicle, abandon it. Your safety is much important than your car's safety!
