Chevy Equinox vs. Ford Explorer: Which SUV is Right for the Franklin TN Area?
Favorites of today's American family, both Chevy Equinox and Ford Explorer are powerful crossovers with go-anywhere capabilities, slates of the latest in safety and driver-assist features, abundant creature comforts, and plenty of tech-savvy. Which gets the edges where they matter most for our Franklin neck of the Tennessee woods? See how both models compare right here at Walker Chevrolet, and you'll see the answer's Chevy Equinox.
For one, Chevy Equinox goes further than Ford Explorer on city and highway mileage. A 1.6-liter turbo-diesel engine is available, and it can get as many as 39 mpg on the highway. The turbocharged 170-horsepower, 1.5-liter gas engine, on the other hand, can get up to 26 mpg in cities and 32 mpg on highways. Even the available 252-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbo gets approximately 22 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. These estimates all come from the EPA. Ford Explorer, on the one hand, doesn't offer a diesel engine, and its twin-turbo EcoBoost, on the other, only gets up to 19 city mpg and 27 highway mpg.
Secondly, Chevy Equinox is better equipped safety-wise than Ford Explorer, offering most features individually, and a few, like Teen Driver coaching technology and safety alert seating, that the latter doesn't. Available driver aids range from adaptive cruise control and forward collision alert to front pedestrian auto braking, low-speed forward auto brakes, and more. To get features comparable to what Chevy offers, you'll have to purchase a Ford Safe and Smart, and even then, it's a package deal, perhaps putting you on the hook for features you may not be looking for.
Finally, Chevy Equinox gets tech edges on Ford Explorer. You can choose between 7- and 8-inch Chevrolet Infotainment 3 and 3 Plus systems, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available for integrating smartphones, and six USB ports are available total. Plus, 4G LTE Wi-Fi is available via OnStar, wireless charging is an option for compatible electronics, integrated navigation is available, and a seven-speaker Bose premium sound option can take your road mixes to the next level. Ford Explorer provides a choice of only 4.2- or 8-inch displays, there are only 4 total USB ports available, and no wireless charger is offered.
