We'll help you find the perfect size and brand for your truck, car, or SUV. But, the type of tire you get depends on your lifestyle and your individual tastes.
Various Types of Tires and Their Uses
To help you understand what tire terminology actually means as you shop for new tires, we here at Ross Downing GMC have put together this informational page for you. Hopefully, this will help you make your decision the next time your vehicle needs new tires.
Highway, or All-Season, Tires
Highway, or All-season Tires are exactly what they sound like - a jack of all trades sort of tire that is good for all of your daily commuting and travel. They have good traction, and offer a quiet and smooth ride. Plus, this type of tire is known for their long life, which means you'll get the most bang for your buck with this type of tire.
Mud Tires
Mud Tires are great for, well, mud. If you have an SUV or truck and you live on a dirt road, or travel on dirt roads frequently, this is the tire for you. They can be noisy, and they can run into the expensive side, but, they offer superior mud and off-road traction.
All Terrain Tires
All Terrain Tires have better dirt road and off-road traction than an All-Season or Highway tire, thanks to their deeper tread. They're also quieter than Mud Tires. But, just make sure you get them rotated frequently so that they wear evenly.
All Terrain/Mud Tires
All Terrain/Mud Tires are a cross between the previous two types of tires. They have a lot of traction, like the full Mud Tire, and they're almost as loud as them as well. But, they wear well and have a longer life, similar to the All-Terrain.
High Performance Tires
High Performance Tires are great if you tend to drive at higher speeds and have a performance-minded vehicle. Although, you don't have to have a speedy sports car to enjoy this type of tire, as many different brands and models accommodate this type of tire now. There are different types of High Performance Tires, and they are coded by letters. Each letter has its own speed rating:
- The "S" type of High Performance Tire earns a rating of approximately 112 mph
- The "T" type of High Performance Tire earns a rating of around 118 mph
- The "H" type of High Performance earns a rating of 130 mph
- The "V" type of High Performance Tire earns a rating of 149 mph
- The "W" type earns a rating of 169 mph
- The "Y" type of tires earn a rating of 186 mph
Of course, there's also Snow, or Winter, Tires that are great for people who live in a place where it snows a lot for a good chunk of the year. But, we don't really have to worry about that here in Louisiana, do we?
