What affects the life of my battery?
There are various reasons why your battery may not be functioning properly. It may simply be that it is old enough that it needs to be replaced. Batteries can last a long time, but not forever. If you have been driving your vehicle on lots of short trips, starting and stopping it often, the battery may become drained, because it’s not enough time for the alternator to fully recharge the battery. Extreme temperatures can also be a factor. If you live in an extremely cold, or very hot climate, this can drain a battery faster than normal weather conditions.  If you leave your audio system on, headlights, or cabin lights overnight, you may very well wake up to a dead battery. And lastly, over time corrosion can build up on the battery’s terminals and cause the battery to not function properly. For some of these things, it's an easy fix. For others, it will require a new battery.Â
How do I know when it's time for a new battery?
As a battery ages, it eventually loses its 'juice'. If you have an older battery here are some signs it may need to be replaced:Â
- Headlights seem to be dim
- Car won't start on the first try
- Electric accessories operate slower than usual
- Battery warning light comes on
What should I do if my battery dies?
Unfortunately, many people end up in a situation where their car just won't start. There are many reasons why a car might not start up, but a dead battery is a common issue. First, make sure everything in the car - the lights, the radio - is turned off. That may have been the cause of draining the battery. Next, if you are so inclined, pop open the hood and make sure the battery cables are securely connected. Whether you are at home, in a parking lot, or on the side of a road, you need to find someone to jump start a car. If you belong to an auto club such as AAA give them a call. If not, try to get ahold of someone that has jumper cables. If you get a jump start, and your car starts, make sure to drive it around for a while before turning it off. If you realize that a light was left on overnight and your car starts as normal once it has recharged you should be all set. But if you continue to have a car that barely starts, or a warning light that comes on, bring it into the shop to be checked out right away.
