Since its introduction in the 2005 model year, the Chevrolet Equinox has worked its way into the top tier of the highly competitive compact crossover SUV segment due to refined driving dynamics, a high-quality cabin, and loads of standard features. The 2018 model year marks the beginning of the vehicle’s third generation of production. Four trims are available with this iteration: L, LS, LT, and Premier.
What’s New for the 2018 Chevy Equinox?
The power plant of the 2018 Chevy Equinox is the LYX, which is a 1.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine that generates 170 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Although the standard drivetrain on the Equinox is front-wheel drive, you can go with an all-wheel drivetrain instead if you choose the LS, LT, or Premier trim. However, it’s the front-wheel drivetrain that optimizes fuel economy to 26/32 mpg.
Designed as a five-seater, the 2018 Chevy Equinox supplies 103.2 cubic feet of passenger volume. The trunk supplies 29.9 cubic feet of cargo space, although you can fold down the rear seatback to expand it to 63.5 cubic feet. If you go with the upper-level LT trim, Chevrolet adds 8-way power adjustability on the driver’s seat. And on the Premier, seating accommodation is further enhanced by 8-way power adjustability on the front passenger seat, front-seat and steering-wheel heating ability, front-seat cooling capability, and a memory system on the driver’s side.
Regarding comfort and convenience, the 2018 Equinox starts off with features like cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free phone operation and audio streaming, steering wheel-mounted controls, a Wi-Fi hotspot for accessing the Internet at 4G LTE speeds, remote keyless entry, Chevrolet MyLink infotainment integration, and a six-speaker stereo system that includes a 7-inch color touchscreen. The Premier gets a lot more: remote vehicle start, dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with remote garage-door opener, a free three-month SiriusXM satellite radio subscription, wireless charging ability, a multi-color driver information display, USB dual charging-only ports, and an 8-inch color touchscreen that replaces the 7-inch one on the other trims.
Airbags on the new Chevy Equinox consist of dual front, dual side impact, and dual side curtain ones. Also standard on the Equinox are a rear vision camera; StabiliTrak for vehicle stability control; all-wheel anti-lock disc brakes; Teen Driver mode for monitoring the driving habits of younger drivers; and a trial subscription to the OnStar Guidance Plan for car care services such as roadside assistance, automatic crash response, and stolen vehicle assistance. On the Premier, the rear vision camera is upgraded to 360-degree vision; and it gets a ton of advanced safety features, which include a front distance indicator, a rear park assist system, forward collision alert, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, and side blind spot alert.
