The Chevrolet Cruze is now in the second year of its new model generation, having been completely redesigned for the 2016 model year. The second generation redesign launched the Cruze headlong into the modern compact sedan world, including such key technological features as smartphone integration, active safety features and a modern turbocharged engine. These and many other improvements pushed the Cruze into the upper echelons of the heavily contested compact sedan segment, but Chevrolet’s designers were not content with simply resting on their laurels.
What’s New for the 2017 Chevy Cruze?
The 2017 Chevy Cruze, while not as groundbreaking and innovative as the 2016 model, is another big jump forward for the Cruze brand, thanks to a variety of new options that are designed to build on the previous model’s successes and expand the brand’s appeal to an even wider segment of customers.
The biggest addition to the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze is the new hatchback model. This puts the Chevy on the same footing as a lot of other compacts which also come in both sedan and hatchback form. The Cruze Hatch is very stylish, thanks to a rear design that flows seamlessly into the Cruze’s nicely sculpted front end. It also provides a significant boost to the Cruze’s general utility, thanks to the easy cargo access that the hatchback rear door and the low load floor provide. It also gives you a lot more cargo room to play with, providing over a 50% increase in cargo space from the sedan’s 14.8 cubic feet to 22.7 cubic feet, which can be increased to 47.2 cubic feet by folding down the rear seats.
Another addition to the 2017 Cruze that will give buyers more options and the car more versatility is the new turbodiesel engine. While it only offers 137 horsepower to the standard 1.4-liter turbo engine’s 153 horsepower, it increases the car’s fuel economy to an amazing 30 mpg in the city and 52 mpg on the highway. While the base engine on the Cruze is quite economical, at 30 mpg city and 40 mpg highway, the turbodiesel option expands the car’s appeal to the more economy or environmentally-minded buyers as well. With hybrid-level economy without the drawbacks or the high price point of a hybrid, this new model is bound to make some waves.
The final major change in the 2017 Chevy Cruze spec sheet is the Teen Driver Assist system. While offered as an option previously, it is now a standard feature on all models. The small size and the forgiving driving mechanics of the Cruze make it a great car for developing good driving habits, and the Teen Driver assist allows you to make sure that your children are doing just that by giving you access to statistics like average speed and the amount of active safety alerts, as well as allowing you to get instant alerts whenever the car exceeds a certain speed.
