History The Huntington area had been inhabited by an Algonquian-speaking tribe for several generations before white settlers arrived. After the land was purchased for by traders, it eventually came to be an important settlement on the East Coast. The area was used by the British during the Revolutionary War in the Battle of Long Island, and it was later the home to the Long Island Rail Road. By the end of WWII, the population exploded, and the town became what it is today.

Museums Those interested in museums will get a kick out of the Vanderbilt Museum and the Heckscher Museum of Art. The Vanderbilt Museum has large marine and natural history displays, as well as a planetarium. The mansion doubles as a museum, but can itself be admired alone for it mason work and carpentry. The Heckscher is a more traditional Western art museum housed in a 1920s building. You can see a range of rotating exhibits, as well as permanent pieces by Georgia O'Keeffe, George Grosz, Man Ray, Durand, and more.
