The City of Modesto is the largest city in Stanislaus County, and it is a truly great place to live or visit. Often associated with 1950s pop culture, Modesto has made a name for itself as the location of George Lucas’s American Graffiti. The city is also known for a number of festivals and events, and Modesto has even been named among the top cities in the U.S. for health, well-being, and value. Ron Smith Buick GMC couldn’t be happier to serve the area!
Modesto History
Modesto started as a stop on the railroad that went between Sacramento and Los Angeles, leading to its foundation in 1870. Much of the city’s original financing came from William Ralston, who ultimately refused to have the city named after him (hence, “Modesto” stands for his modesty). The city is located near the Tuolumne River, and much of the area surrounding it is considered rural. Known for its commitment to quality water and irrigation, Modesto’s official motto is proudly displayed on the Modesto Arch: “Water Wealth Contentment and Health.”
Modesto Landmarks
In addition to the Modesto Arch, there are several locations to visit in the area. For instance, McHenry Mansion draws visitors every year, as it is located on the National Register of Historic Places. Once the home of banker Robert McHenry, this mansion dates to the 1880s. There’s also a bronze statue in George Lucas Plaza that’s inspired by American Graffiti. Finally, the Gallo Center for the Arts is not only a striking architectural masterpiece, but also a great place to see live performances.
