Merced is a vibrant and welcoming community located in the San Joaquin Valley in Central California. Not only does the area have a rich culture and an interesting history, but there are also several fun places to visit and things to do. Nicknamed the “Gateway to Yosemite,” Merced is more than just a jumping-off point — it’s a great place to relax and have fun. Our staff at Ron Smith Buick GMC is proud to serve the area.

Merced History

The name “Merced” is derived from the Spanish word for “mercy.” The city officially came into being in 1889, and it now has a population exceeding 80,000 with a steadily rising rate of growth. Most of the area relies on agriculture and business for income, though the Castle Air Force Base had also employed a large portion of the population until its closure in 1995. Other industries include printing, boat building, and packaging. 

    Merced Landmarks

    One local landmark is Applegate Park, which includes a zoo. You can see rescued and rehabilitated animals like cougars, coyotes, bears, bobcats, emus, tortoises, and monkeys. There’s even a small petting area known as the Kiddie Corral where you can get up close and personal with chickens, rabbits, ducks, tortoises, and alpaca. This is one memorable place for both kids and adults.  

    Merced is also home to a branch of the University of California. This branch is the newest location in the system, and it has about 7,000 students. Located near Lake Yosemite, the campus is known for its striking design and low environmental impact.

      Things to Do in Merced

      Looking for fun things to do in the area? First, check out the Castle Air Force Museum. There are historic aircraft from World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam. The Merced National Wildlife Refuge is great for those who love bird watching, and it’s also the ideal location for those who want to learn more about the great outdoors. Finally, check out Playhouse Merced to see unmatched local theatre. You can see high-quality live entertainment year-round.
