The brakes on your car are one of the most important parts. As your car gets older and especially if you live in a hilly or urban area, you might get more use out of your brakes than the average driver which could lead to faster degradation.
As a rule of thumb, the best brakes are those you don't have to think about while you're driving. If, however, you can feel or hear signs of your brakes struggling, this may be a sign that you need a brake check.
Top 3 Signs of Faulty Brakes
- Squeaky Stops, Smells & Vibrations: This is the most common warning sign that your brakes may need attention. If you can hear an audible screech or squeal as you slow to stop, you could be hearing the wear indicator on your brake pads. Similarly, if you smell burning rubber or feel your car begin to vibrate or strain when apply the brakes, you may need an inspection.
- Pulling to One Side: If you can feel and see your car pulling to one side as you apply pressure to the brakes, you may have a stuck or worn caliper causing friction to one wheel. This could also be a sign of a collapsed brake hose, uneven pads, or a sign that you need a tire inflation or alignment. In any event, it is something you will want to address.
- Pedal Down: Another sign your brakes may be in trouble, is if you apply pressure and the pedal sinks with a delayed response. That is--if you step on the brake pedal and your car takes longer to stop than normal with your foot practically on the floor. This could be indicative of an issue with the hydraulic system, brake fluid leak, or faulty pads.
