WHEN SHOULD I GET NEW TIRES FOR MY CAR, TRUCK OR SUV?
Your vehicle's tires are the first and only contact with the road, so it is important to choose the right set of high quality new tirs when replacing them. Here are some helpful hints for things to look for in your existing tires to help determine if you should get new ones:
Age : How old are the tires? Do they show wear, cracks and stress in the rubber? Tires that have been left in outdoor conditions for extended periods, or in storage for years, can lose reliability and should be replaced.
Tread Depth : Tread depth on any auto tire show be greater than 2/32 of an inch. You can use a Lincoln penny to do a fast test. Stick a penny in the tread with the head of the penny upside down. If you can view the top of Abraham Lincoln's head, your tire should be replaced soon.
Uneven tread wear : If your tires are wearing down unevenly, it could be a sign your vehicle needs an alignment and new tires. Tires with correct alignment will wear evenly across the width of the rubber surface.
Visible Damage : If you can see screws, nails or other debris sticking out from your tire, or there are gouges or other signs of damage, you will need to replace your tires to ensure you do not experience an accident while driving.
