In order to start the engine, your starter needs a large amount of electricity. The battery stores electricity to send to the starter. When you turn the key in the ignition or press the ignition button, the battery sends electricity to the starter. Then, when your engine is up and running, the alternator creates more electricity and recharges the battery. But, like all batteries, your car battery will lose its ability to hold a charge over time.

Signs of a Dying Battery

You likely will not notice at first that your battery is losing its ability to hold a charge. However, as it gets closer and closer to dying, you may begin to see certain symptoms pop up. Maybe you have to try a few times to start your vehicle, or maybe it takes a little longer to start. These could be due to the battery holding just barely enough charge to send to the starter. If it's dark out and you turn your headlights on before you start the engine, you may notice that they're dim until the engine comes on. This is because the battery powers electrical components while the engine is turned off, but the alternator does this when you turn the engine on.
