The year was 1935 and the world was struggling to pull itself out of the Great Depression. On a warm Buenos Aires afternoon an excited young 27 year old American man stepped off the Norwegian freighter “Hoyanger”. A Stanford graduate fluent in Spanish with management experience in the car business, Meredith K. Smith, was in Argentina to work with the General Motors Overseas Division and begin his life-long relationship with Chevrolet.. After returning to Southern California, Meredith bought the Ontario Chevrolet store on Holt Boulevard along with its Chino satellite location on July 14, 1941. Both dealerships were called M.K. Smith Chevrolet.

New car production became extremely limited. Every dealer in Ontario closed their doors by the end of 1942 except M.K. Smith. He survived by subsidizing his dealership income selling and servicing farm equipment, and opening both the Ontario Appliance Center and a Union gas station. In 1975 M.K. Smith turned the dealership operations over to his son Bob Smith. In 1999 M.K. Smith’s grandsons Marc and Todd Smith took over as third-generation managers.
