Performance
With the revised 2020 design, Cadillac unveiled a brand new engine for the XT5. Offered as the standard engine on both the Luxury and Premium trims is a 2.0L Turbocharged Inline-4 DOHC VVT engine. This engine won't disappoint XT5 fans with 237 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Drivers will love the addition of the electronically controlled braking system. With a three-step sliding camshaft, direct injection, and electronic throttle control, this engine has plenty of power response when you push down on the gas pedal.
The second engine offered on the Cadillac XT5 is a 3.6L V6 DOHC VVT, also with direct injection. This engine gets up to 310 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque, which is great compared to other models in its class. With an optional trailering package, this engine can tow up to 3,500 lbs. Cadillac drivers can find this engine standard on the model's Sport trim and as an available option on the Premium Luxury.
Both the 2.0L I-4 and 3.6 L V6 engines are paired with a Hydra-Matic 9-speed transmission that puts the competition to shame. You'll also find Active Fuel Management and an automatic start/stop function standard on both engines, along with optional AWD. As of right now, there is no official fuel economy rating, but experts suggest this SUV will get 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway for the 3.6L V6, as the 2019 model did.
Interior and Technology
If the world has learned anything about Cadillac by now, it’s that the automaker builds their cars starting with the driver. The interior of the 2020 Cadillac XT5 will be nothing but impressive each time you get in it. Whether it’s 800 miles on a road trip or 3 miles to and from work years to come, the driving experience delivered from a 2020 Cadillac XT5 is beyond the current standards of luxury.
Expect a high-end interior with artist-inspired hues to complement each other and heated front seats now as standard. The new styling offers a better distinction between trims and additional themes such as the Jet Black or Kona Brown gives the option of premium leather. Noise cancellation via expertly crafted Bose concert-like sound experience speakers makes your long drives that much more enjoyable. The Cadillac infotainment system places the driver at ease in the most important seat in the car. A rearview camera and an 8-inch touchscreen come standard with available GPS navigation abilities. One-touch phone pairing, advanced charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and advanced safety features, such as lane departure warning and vibrations in the driver’s seat to prevent an accident, are available or standard depending on trim. With over 20 available safety and driver features, the new XT5 is sure to please safety conscious and tech-savvy drivers.
This model year, an option to disable the auto start/stop function on the XT5 has been added. This will be one of the most touted improvements you will hear dealerships and Cadillac representatives talk about. Auto start/stop technology is industry-wide tech (not exclusive to Cadillac) that increases the fuel efficiency of a vehicle by turning the engine off when your car sits idle. Your engine will shut off to increase your vehicle’s fuel efficiency, when at a red light, for example. Although your engine is not running, your car is still on. Once you press on the accelerator, the engine ignites and moves forward without you needing to restart the car.
The all-new auto start/stop technology was a point of contention for XT5 owners. Some loved it and others did not. Rather than choosing a side, Cadillac pleased all of its customers by installing a switch that, when utilized, disables the tech. This switch is able to activate and deactivate the technology and comes standard in the 2020 XT5.
Sport model
The Cadillac XT5 Sport offers a complete change in attitude from the classic XT5. What you will undeniably notice before you start the new turbocharged V6 engine is the darker, bold exterior. The aesthetic difference between the Sport and regular XT5 model is that the Sport simply features less chrome. The chrome border to an all-black gloss grill is one of the sparse chrome finishes on the exterior of the Sport model. While the shape of the car does not change in the slightest, you will experience darker and less flashy finishes on the outside of the sport model.
The backside of the vehicle really shows onlookers the edgier attitude. The taillights will not have the same red coverings that the regular XT5 does. The light coverings will be clear, and you’ll be able to see the white LED piped taillights, creating a noir feel to the dark exterior of the car.
The Sport model comes standard with the 3.6L V6, which is available as an upgrade on the Premium Luxury as well. With 310 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque, this peppy engine provides plenty of performance to go along with the 9-speed automatic transmission. Other performance features of the Sport model include upgraded suspension, retuned steering, dual-clutch Sport Control AWD, and 20-inch wheels.
For those who feel the Sport and Premium Luxury trims are not quite enough, or want range-topping extras on the Luxury model, Cadillac has created another way to add features and refinement. An additional Platinum package is also available for all trims, taking the 2020 Cadillac XT5 above and beyond with advanced technology and an even more sophisticated interior.
