Winter Car Maintenance Tips from Donovan Auto & Truck Center
It's that time of the year where temperatures are starting to drop and road conditions are becoming increasingly more dangerous. At Donovan Auto & Truck Center in Wichita, we implore drivers in Kansas who are travelling up north for the holidays to take the initiative and check their vehicles thoroughly before hitting the roads this winter, and stop by our service center to make sure your vehicle is prepared.
Whether you have a new or used car, truck, or SUV, it's important to be aware of the potential hazards that could slow you down when the roads freeze over. Don't let the cold temperatures wreak havoc on your vehicle, and consider some of these preventative-care tips to ensure your safety on the road.
Use Common Sense
First and foremost, it's important to use common sense before setting out during inclement weather. Remember to keep a close eye on the forecast, travel only when necessary and keep your speed down. But for those times when you do have to get out there, you want to make sure that your vehicle is equally as prepared as you are.
Prepare Your Vehicle
Extreme weather conditions can be rough on vehicles. Combat the cold by checking underneath the hood to make sure your fluids are topped off and to ensure there are no leaks in any of your hoses. Inspect your radiator and add antifreeze if necessary - this will ensure your heat and air conditioning systems work properly. Check your windshield wiper fluid and top off using a de-icer or cold-weather specific fluid to keep ice from freezing over your windshield. It is also helpful to replace windshield wiper blades completely if they are old or worn.
Inspect your brake lines thoroughly and check for excessive wear or damage to prevent having a problem trying to stop on a slippery road. It's also important to check your tires for adequate traction and - depending on where you do most of your driving - it may be beneficial to invest in a set of winter specific tires which are designed to adhere better on icy or snow-covered roads. Keep your gas tank filled above halfway and have your exhaust system examined and checked for leaks to make sure no carbon monoxide enters the cabin as you are driving.
Pack an Emergency Kit
It's better to be safe than sorry. Prepare for the worst and keep a standard survival kit handy making sure to include the following items:
- First aid kit
- Extra blankets/clothing
- Flashlights
- Ice scrapper/small shovel
- Jumper cables
- Matches and candles or flares
- Non-perishable foods
- Sand, kitty litter, ash, or salt for traction
- Tow rope or chain
On the Road Safety
Even if your car is outfitted properly and is ready for the cold, it's important to be cautious of other drivers when conditions get bad. Always make sure your headlights are on and are working properly when visibility is low. You must be able to see out of your vehicle, and other drivers must be able to see you. Give yourself plenty of room in between your vehicle and the driver in front of you, and be gentle when accelerating and braking to prevent tires from spinning.
What Do I Do If I Get Stuck?
The most important thing to do is to stay calm. Utilize your emergency kit and stay comfortable. Keep yourself safe by staying inside the vehicle and allow fresh air to circulate through an open window. You want to run the motor sparingly and monitor your gas level if you are nearing empty. It's important to stretch your arms and legs to keep your blood flowing and to stay awake when waiting for help to arrive. If you have a cell phone, call for assistance or text someone to let them know where you are and let them know how you are doing. If you do exit the vehicle, work slowly in the cold weather to avoid over-exertion.
