The 2019 Chevrolet Suburban is a powerful full-size SUV which can carry up to nine people and tow or carry heavy loads. It offers plenty of luxury to go along with its practicality.
Trim Levels
The Suburban comes in three trim levels. The entry-level LS provides 18-inch aluminum wheels, cruise control, remote keyless entry, side steps, roof rails, rear parking sensors, and heated mirrors. The LT adds automatic high beam headlamps and a power liftgate. At the top of the range, the Premier offers 20-inch wheels, power-folding mirrors, xenon headlamps, adaptive dampers, and a hands-free tailgate opener.
Engine
Most versions of the Suburban are fitted with a lively 5.3-liter V-8 producing 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque and linked to a six-speed automatic transmission. Go for the RST or Premier Plus special editions, however, and you can have a mighty 6.2-liter V-8, producing an even more impressive 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque and linked to an upgraded 10-speed automatic transmission. Either way, you will not be short of power. All-wheel drive is available as an option on all trims.
Performance
The Suburban is a large, solid vehicle, but it can still make fairly rapid progress, especially in the RST trim with the 6.2-liter engine fitted. It can also tow up to a colossal 8,300 pounds. Economy-wise, the Suburban holds its own with its competitors, achieving a respectable 15 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway with the 5.3-liter engine. Thanks to the 10-speed gearbox, the 6.2-liter engine can record a very similar 14/23 mpg. If you want to go off-road, go for the Z71 package, which adds upgraded components, all-terrain tires, and some electronic assistance to the LT version.
Interior
Up to nine people can be comfortably accommodated in the Suburban, although this reduces to eight if you go for the luxurious front bucket seats. Almost 40 cubic feet of luggage can be accommodated with all of the seats in place, rising to 77 cubic feet with the third row folded, and a massive 122 cubic feet with the second and third rows down.
Equipment levels are good across the range. The LS provides a six-speaker audio system, OnStar communication, and an eight-inch touch screen with Bluetooth and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. Split-folding second- and third-row seats are standard, along with triple-zone climate control and cruise control. The LT adds leather upholstery and an upgraded nine-speaker audio system. Go for the Premier and you will get a navigation system, a 10-speaker surround sound system, and more luxury touches, like ventilated seats.
Safety
All versions of the Suburban come with ABS, traction control, a rearview camera, and seven air bags. A package incorporating automatic emergency braking and active lane control is optional for the LS and standard elsewhere. The Premier trim includes blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adds front parking sensors. Overall, the Suburban is a solid, safe vehicle, which is reflected in the four-star rating awarded to it by the NHTSA.
