A GLIMPSE AT THE GMC SIERRA'S PAST
The GMC Sierra is the pickup truck twin to the Chevrolet Silverado. Both trucks have their roots in the year 1962, when General Motors released its first version of what it is now known as the GMC Sierra. Body styles offered in the first Sierra were known as Wideside and Fenderside. The GMC trucks were initially called 1000/K1000, 1500/K1500 and 2500. The "K" denoted four-wheel drive capability on the trucks.
In 1967, the factory introduced a more modern version of the GMC Sierra and over the subsequent decades sales steadily increased as the truck's body style and features evolved. 1988 marked a pivotal year in the history of the GMC Sierra, as General Motors completely re-designed the truck to meet the growing appetite and tastes of the full-sized truck market.
The next generation of GMC Sierra trucks were launched in the North American market in 1999. The growing popularity of full-size trucks as an everyday transportation vehicle (and not just for farm, construction and other work projects) helped exponentially increase overall sales.
The GMC Sierra continues to this day to be one of the best-selling full-size trucks in America. General Motors engineers continue to tweak the truck from model year to model year enhancing options and features for the truck buying public.
