The Beginning
The Silverado owes its success to the 1918 Chevrolet One-Ton, which is significant for being the first purpose-built truck for Chevrolet. The truck actually began as an affordable platform that customers built on. The year the One-Ton launched was also when Chevrolet merged with General Motors.
By the time the Chevrolet International Series AC Light Delivery went on the market in 1929, steel wheels had officially replaced old wood wheels in Chevrolet trucks. The Chevrolet truck also had an OHV 6-cylinder engine, making it the first truck to have one.
New Design, New Era
In 1938, the Chevrolet Half-Ton came to the auto industry. Designed by the all-new Art and Color department, this model had a stylish design, with a new front bumper and vertical grille. Its 1947 follow-up, the Chevrolet 3100 Series, built on these styling cues with a horizontal grille and a rounded profile. For the first time, and an in-dash radio was also included in the truck.
First Heavy-Duty Truck
Chevrolet continued to revamp and release new trucks throughout the 20th century. The first true heavy-duty truck came to the market in 1973 with the launch of the Chevrolet C30 One-Ton Dually. The first Chevrolet Crew Cab Dually, it packed a 5.7-liter V8 engine under the hood and had a new square body. In 1975, the Silverado name finally appeared as a trim.
First Silverado Model
The now-iconic Chevrolet Silverado finally launched as its own model in 1999. It introduced a new line of VortecTM V8 engines and featured a new muscular design. In 2007, the Silverado was redesigned to be more efficient and powerful, leading to an array of well-earned awards. Exciting improvements have continued to be made to each new generation of the Chevrolet Silverado, making the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado the best yet.
